Known simply as Iowa or UI, the University of Iowa is a public state funded research university that was established on February 25, 1847. A member of the American Association of Universities, it was originally termed the state University of Iowa. The learning institution also holds the title of the first public school in the nation to accept both male and female students in equal footing.

Pioneering in some events, IU has carved a significant place in education and have successfully produced alumni that are now big names in their chosen fields.

With eleven colleges under its wing, the University of Iowa offers plenty of degrees including Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral and First Professional.

Alumni

Alma mater to a multitude of people, UI has produced various outstanding students in fields like sports, science, academics, politics and many more. A former point guard of the Chicago Bulls, B.J. Armstrong is a graduate of this school as well as Larry Station, a two-time All-American football
player. Another graduate is Mark Strand who is a Pulitzer Prize winner for his poem A Blizzard on One in 1999. Governor of the Virgin Islands, Archie Alexander is also an alumni of the institution.

Rankings and Reviews

According to the April 2010 rankings of the Asian Correspondent, the university is included in the top ten list of international universities as well as the 26th best public university in the United States (2008, U.S. News and World Reports). For twenty consecutive years (1990 to 2009), the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics ranked as one of America’s Best Hospitals. It is also considered as the best University in Iowa, according to the 2008 edition of the U.S. News & World Report.
