Using a survey among college admissions advisors and counselors, several critical variables have been outlined for students and parents to consider in preparation for college application.

First, all sections of the application form must be completely filled out particularly the personal details, letters of recommendation and personal statement essays. The information contained in these sections must be consistent to give a lasting impression about the student.

Second, despite the good faith and intent of parents to get the best education for their children, their role in filling out the college application form should be limited. It is highly recommended that college applicants using Facebook should refrain from posting revealing pictures and information that might smear their reputation and impression as promising applicants like drinking alcohol and partying too much. Do not lose the chance of studying in the best educational institutions even before making the application.

Fourth, it is advisable for these young applicants to consult their guidance counselors since they are in a good position to recommend the best possible courses. However, the time spent by guidance counselors for each student applicant is sometimes limited because of the large number of students assigned to them and their other school responsibilities. Thus, parents and the student applicants can consider tapping the assistance of college admissions review centers. At the end, the main responsibility of being accepted in the chosen college and field will still depend on the student applicant.

Lastly, consider not only the quality of education which the school can provide to student but also what the student can contribute to the school given the institutional vision and objectives. Please note that an educational institution will not only look for students who can excel academically but also who can carry a good image for the school.
